This was a trip organised on Adit Now – many thanks to Simon for being such a good guide. This mine is very securely gated – it’s not possible to get in unescorted.
Coed Talon Brickworks
I don’t know much about this – didn’t even know it was a brickworks until I got home and googled it – this was a chance find on the way back from Brymbo…
Brymbo Steelworks
There has been a steelworks in Brymbo, near Wrexham, for over 200 years. The site is now being redeveloped, but some original areas remain – officially heritage areas, but very little seems to be happening to save them.
Deep in a wooded valley, a loading platform.
Denbigh Asylum
Another day, another Welsh asylum – and what a difference from Talgarth. On the outside, Denbigh is an absolutely stunning building – it could easily be a posh country hotel. Inside, it’s a mess – massive holes in the floor, lots of decay and demolition. Still quite photogernic, though…
Talgarth Asylum
Talgarth Asylum in Wales has been partly demolished – it’s a lovely set of buildings, though, still in mostly pretty good shape…
A wee Welsh mine…
Tucked away in the North Wales hills, this mine was never very successful – after about 15 years of preparatory work, it only actually produced for about 6 years at the end of the 19th Century. What’s worth seeing is the power source – a giant waterwheel was used for both pumping and lifting up the deep vertical shaft.
Llanberis Bomb Depot
A giant WWII bomb depot in North Wales that embarrassingly collapsed and had to be dug out in a hurry. It’s a pretty empty site, but with some impressively huge underground chambers – with brilliant eco effects in some of them 😉
The Proving Ground
This MoD proving ground operated from 1940 to 1995, shared between the Navy and the Army. There were two 150m ranges and one 75m range – the larger two each had 8 firing positions and 6 sand-filled heavy concrete butts. The proving ground tested everything from rifles to 7.2in Howitzers.
The site is now used by a selection of businesses who have brought their own interesting artifacts to add to what the MoD left behind…
Benhar Quarry Explosives Factory
Another explosives site, now used for paintballing:
